New 998 Suicide & Crisis Hotline Launches in the US on July 16, 2022

The new three-digit Suicide & Crisis Lifeline hotline – 988 will begin taking calls on Saturday. The new number will connect Americans in crisis directly to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – which has more than 200 crisis centers across the US.

While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

Callers will also be able to send text messages to 988.

In 2020 Congress authorized the three-digit number to make it easier to reach the lifeline during a crisis. T

Experts and government officials determined that the three-digit 9-8-8 number would be easier for troubled Americans in crisis to remember than the lifeline’s existing toll-free 10-digit number, (800) 273-8255.

Calls to the old number will work and crisis calls will still go through
