Forest Fire Continues to Ravage Southern France, Evacuations Ordered

The wildfires in Gironde have razed least 7,300 hectares and caused 10,000 people to evacuate as current weather conditions cause it to spread even further.

At least a thousand fire fighters  have been deployed to extinguish the two fires that have been raging since Tuesday, in La Teste-de-Buch and in Landiras but have failed to control them so far.

“The fires are still not fixed and unfortunately the conditions are similar with wind forecasts for today” , said fire commander Matthieu Jomain.

A house and a restaurant have already been burned  in the village of Cazaux while its residents and those living nearby have been told to evacuate as soon as possible.

Another wildfire broke out in Tarascon on Thursday and burned at least 1,000 hectares but has already been controlled.

“ We are living through an exceptionally harsh season. Three times more forests that were burned than in 2020 . We will continue to hold out,” said French President Emmanuel Macron.
