Valve Failure Causes 23,000 Gallon Gas Spilled on Colonial Pipeline

The Colonial Pipeline was shut down on July 4, 2022 after approximately 24,000 gallons (or 591 barrels) of gasoline spilled in Loudon, Tennessee.

The spill, was discovered after authorities at the Colonial Pipeline were notified that a resident reported a gas smell. 

A ‘valve failure’ was identified the cause of the spill.

On July 7, a company spokesperson indicated that no gas had been found outside of Colonial Pipeline property, However gas was later discovered outside the company’s property line on July 11.

No gas has been discovered in the air or surface water, the spokesperson said and the company is monitoring for contamination and pollution to protect nearby waterways
