The Pentagon announced that it killed a leader of the Islamic State in Syria in a drone strike.
“U.S. Central Command Forces conducted a UAS strike outside Jindayris, northwest Syria targeting two senior ISIS officials, July 12, 2022. Maher al-Agal, one of the top five ISIS leaders and the leader of ISIS in Syria, was killed in the strike. A senior ISIS official closely associated with Maher was seriously injured during the strike.” said the US Central Command.
Al-Agal was reportedly responsible for expanding ISIS networks outside of Iraq and Syria.
It is not yet known if al-Agal’s deputy, another person of interest was also killed in the strike.
“The removal of these ISIS leaders will disrupt the terrorist organization’s ability to further the plot and carry out global attacks,” Col. Joe Buccino, a CENTCOM spokesperson.
