Tajikistan Releases 11 Kyrgyz Nationals Detained On Border-Crossing Charges

At least 11 Kyrgyz citizens, who illegally crossed the border into Tajikistan were released and handed over to the Kyrgyz authorities near the Kyzyl-Bel border control point in the southern region of Batken.

Among the released individuals were a father and his son identified as Aidarbek Khaidarov and Umarbai Khaidarov and said they were in prison in Tajikistan since last year.

“We were 11 people in total, but six among us were arrested and taken to the police station in the village of Arka,” Khaidarov told RFE/RL.

Both Aidarbek and Umarbai said they can’t speak more on the matter because they were instructed to not disclose information on the issue.

The release came as on June 3 Kyrgyzstan released 11 Tajik nationals detained on similar charges of crossing the border illegally.

Moreover, in May, delegations from both neighboring countries held talks in the bordering areas between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and agreed to release people who crossed the borders by mistake.

Many border areas between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have been disputed since the collapse of the Soviet Union n 1991.

In 2021, over 36 people in Kyrgyzstan and 19 others in Tajikistan were killed after clashes erupted along a disputed segment of the border between the two states.
