Brazil Opposition Party Member Shot Dead

A Brazilian leftist opposition party member was shot dead during his birthday celebration on Saturday.

Marcelo Arruda, a Workers’ Party (PT) official and a municipal guard, was celebrating his birthday in Foz de Iguacu, Parana when Jorge Jose da Rocha Guaranho entered the private event and shot him dead.

Gleisi Hoffmann, the President of the Workers’ Party, expressed her condolences on Twitter.

“In the farewell of comrade Marcelo Arruda, murdered by a Bolsonarista, I warn of political violence and the urgency of legal action,” Hoffman said in a tweet.

Guaranho entered the party while waving a gun around and yelling insults at guests, left the party, only to return about 15 to 20 minutes later, and pointed a gun directly at Arruda.

Arruda identified himself as a member of the security forces and ordered Guaranho to stand down.

Arruda, who was also armed managed to return fire, killing Guaranho in return.
