Sri Lanka’s President to Resign Following Violent Civil Unrest

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has announced that he will resign on July 13, 2022 July in the wake of destructive and violent protests.

The announcement came from Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena who says he was  informed by Rajapaksa of his decision to step down.

Flames are visibile erupting from ‘Fifth Lane’ the private residence of Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister.

The announcement comes just hours after protesters broke into the private residence of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and have set it on fire,

Earlier in the day thousands of protestors stormed and occupied the official residence of Sri Lanka’s President in the capital of Colombo.
