Confidential reports leaked to the French magazine Marianne suggested the Eiffel Tower is in a poor state and needs repair.
“If Gustave Eiffel visited the place, he would have a heart attack,” said an unnamed manager at the Tower.
According to the confidential reports, the Tower is riddled with rust and needs “a full repair, but it is being given a 60 million Euro cosmetic makeover” ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“At best, it will be mostly useless, but at the very worst, it will make the defects in the existing layer of paint worse and result in corrosion,” experts told Marriane.
Meanwhile, Sete, the company that oversees the Tower, which is 99% owned by the city hall, did not want to close it for a prolonged period because of the tourist revenue it would lose.
Reports also claimed the Tower receives about six million visitors yearly, but the COVID lockdowns in 2020 led to a loss of around $54 million in income.
In 2010, a report recommended Sete “take another look at the Eiffel Tower and come up with a completely new maintenance policy centered on the testing of the aging metal structure.”
In 2014, Expiris, an expert paint company reported that the tower had cracks and rusting.
“Even if the general state of the anti-corrosion protection seems good to the eye, this can be misleading,” the report said.
In 2016, a third report found 884 faults, including 68 that pose a risk to “the durability” of the structure.
