A group of protesters attacked an event that commemorated the International Day of Yoga in the Maldives.
The crowd of protesters, who were armed with flags and sticks, disrupted a yoga event hosted by the Indian High Commission in the Maldivian capital of Male.
The protesters invaded the Galolhu National Stadium, where over 150 people, including diplomats and officials, gathered to witness the eighth annual event.
In footage uploaded to Twitter by Maldivian news agency The Maldives Journal, a swarm of protesters could be seen waving Islamic flags while storming the stadium.
According to the protestors, yoga was allegedly “against the tenets of Islam”. The Maldives has a nearly 500,000-person Muslim-majority in its population.
The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is alleged by the Maldivian government to have assisted in the assault.
Ali Nazeer, Indian Minister of State for Home Affairs told the Indian news agency World Is One News (WION), “We believe that this act of violence is aimed at achieving a political end. And the involvement of political opposition (PPM) in this is worrying.”
Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih confirmed that the police has commenced its investigation into the incident, and expressed that the matter is “Being treated as a matter of serious concern and those responsible will be swiftly brought before the law.”
