Biden Calls on Congress to Approve 90-Day Gas Tax Holiday

United States President Joe Biden will call on the US Congress to approve a 90-day gas tax holiday.

“Today, he is calling on Congress and states to take additional legislative action to provide direct relief to American consumers who have been hit with Putin’s Price Hike,” read a fact sheet released by the White House.

If the new legislation is passed, the 90-day pause on gas taxation would save 18 cents on a gallon of gasoline and 24 cents on a gallon of diesel until September.

According to the White House, the legislation will not reduce “any money away” from the Highway Trust Fund, which is “Largely devoted to construction and maintenance of highways and bridges” across the US.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) reported that the highest recorded average price so far for the month of June is $5.16 for regular unleaded, while diesel recorded an average of $5.81.

The White House asserted that Biden “Understands that a gas tax holiday alone will not, on its own, relieve the run-up in costs that we’ve seen.”

Biden is set to make a speech later today regarding “Putin’s price hike” that his administration has dubbed in reference to the rise in gas prices brought on by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

White House officials confirmed that Biden also intends to call on state and local governments to provide consumers extra relief by delaying state sales tax on petrol or imposing similar reforms.
