PLA Navy Launches 3rd Aircraft Carrier

China officially launched its third and most advanced aircraft carrier on Friday at the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) shipyard in Shanghai, where it has been under construction since 2018.

According to China’s Defense Ministry, the carrier, named after the Fujian province, is the first domestically developed aircraft carrier and is due to start mooring and sea trials.

The ministry added that Fujian has a flat flight deck and uses electromagnetic catapults and arresting devices to enable planes to take off and land on its deck and has a full-load displacement of more than 80,000 tons.

Earlier, reports said Fujian and the fourth carrier under construction are larger and able to carry more planes than the two existing vessels and that the fourth carrier might be nuclear-powered

China has reportedly been modernizing its people’s Liberation Army (PLA Navy), which already has two fully functioning aircraft carriers.
