Saudi Arabia’s representative in Geneva Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel reiterated on Tuesday his country’s support for an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital according to international resolutions and the Arab peace initiative.
In his speech to the UN Human Rights Council, Al-Wasel said Kingdom remains committed to supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights.
“The UN should take immediate action to stop Israeli attempts to abolish the national identity of Palestinians, continue illegal settlements, and demolish their houses,” Al-Wasel said.
Meanwhile, member states of the Riyadh-based Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called for speeding up peace negotiations between Palestinian and Israelis in order to achieve a two-state solution to the conflict.
The GCC urged Israel to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip and cease several other human rights violations which are undermining any possibility of achieving peace.
