The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that a federal judge in New York permitted the US authorities to seize two private jets owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich after their flights to Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
After linking both to Abramovich, New York Judge Sarah Cave approved the seizure of two luxury jets – a $60 million Gulfstream G650ER and a $350 million Boeing 787-8.
According to DOJ prosecutors, both jets traveled to Russia back in March, which violated the US’ export prohibitions put on Putin’s regime for its invasion of Ukraine.
“These wealthy Russian oligarchs have helped foster an environment that enabled Russia to pursue its deadly war in Ukraine. The seizure of their valuable possessions, including these two aircraft, is just one way the U.S government holds accountable those who break U.S. laws and support Russia in its attempt to conquer a sovereign nation,” said FBI Assistant Director Michael J. Driscoll.
Abramovich is one of the wealthiest Russians whose assets are being scrutinized for sanctions violations following the invasion of Ukraine, and also recently sold his ownership in Chelsea, a Premier League football club in London.
Court documents from the DOJ also revealed that Abramovich owns the planes through shell companies based in Cyprus, Jersey, and the British Virgin Islands, and added that prosecutors are pursuing penalties of up to twice the value of the jets.
Driscoll expressed that the seizures are “One way the U.S government holds accountable those who break U.S. laws and support Russia in its attempt to conquer a sovereign nation.”
