Republican Texas Representative Bryan Slaton announced on June 6 that he will introduce legislation that would ban minors from attending drag shows in the state.
In the announcement, Slaton said that the children were “subjected to inappropriate sexual content by adults,” citing a drag show in Dallas on June 4.
“The events of this past weekend were horrifying and show a disturbing trend in which perverted adults are obsessed with sexualizing young children,” Slaton said.
Slaton said that he will file the legislation in the next legislative session, which is scheduled to take place on Jan. 10, 2023.
Videos showing children watching drag performances from the “Drag the Kids to Pride Drag Show” event at the Mr. Misster bar went viral online. The event is advertised as family-friendly.
Critics questioned what lawmakers are prioritizing given other situations taking place in Texas, including the recent mass shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers in an elementary school in Uvalde.
