Unidentified gunmen have shot and killed more than 53 people at the St Francis Catholic Church located on Owa-luwa Street in Owo, Nigeria.
The attackers also reportedly used explosives and even targeted children.
“It is a black Sunday in Owo. Our peace and tranquility have been attacked by the enemies of the people. This is a personal loss, an attack on our dear state,” said Owo state governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
State police spokeswoman Ibukun Odunlami said there is no information yet on the attackers and how many people were actually killed.
“It’s still premature to say exactly how many people were killed. But many worshippers [sic] lost their lives while others were injured in the attack,” said Odunlami.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of now while the motive for the attack is still unclear.
