A man shot and murdered two female victims in a parking lot outside Ames’ Cornerstone Church Thursday night, then killed himself.
Police and church authorities, quoted in a report by Des Moines Register, said the accused shooter was also found dead in the parking lot of the church.
The shooter was a man, and both victims were women.
At 6:51 p.m. in Iowa, officials received a report of shots fired in a parking lot.
The shooting took place on the first summer night of a student ministry program called Salt Company.
In a statement published on the Cornerstone Church’s website, it said that they will extend support to those who were affected by the incident as they assured their continued cooperation with authorities on their full investigation.
“We sincerely appreciate the responsiveness of the Story County Sheriff’s Department, Ames PD, and all Law Enforcement Officials who have handled this matter with exceptional professionalism and compassion. Please join us in praying for all affected and their families,” a portion of the church’s statement read.
In a Facebook post, Governor Kim Reynolds called the shooting incident “an act of mindless violence” that claimed the lives of two people.
The incident occurred on the same night that US President Joe Biden delivered a speech to the nation about the need for stricter gun laws.
