Eleven Newborn Babies Killed in Hospital Fire

A fire that broke out in the neonatal ward of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital in Tivaouane, western Senegal on Thursday claimed the lives of 11 newborn babies.

Senegal President Macky Sall revealed the tragic incident in a tweet.

“To their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy,” Sall said.

Senegal’s interior minister Antoine Felix Abdoulaye Diome, quoted in a report by CNN, that President Sall wanted to find out the cause of the hospital fire by launching an investigation.

Diome said they will do the investigation in Tivaouane and in “all hospitals in Senegal where there is a neonatal service”.

Cheikh Bamba Dièye, Senegal’s Minister of Regional Planning and Local Government called the deadly episode “horrific and unacceptable,” and called for an investigation into the country’s health institutions.

“I am appalled by the horrific and unacceptable death of 11 newborn babies in Tivaoune. The recurrence of tragedies in our hospitals reminds us of the obligation to thoroughly review the quality of service in our hospitals. My deepest condolences to the families,” Dièye said in a tweet.
