Rio De Janeiro Police Raid Kills 22

At least 22 people died after Rio de Janeiro’s military police raided a favela to capture the leaders of a drug-trafficking organization on Tuesday.

According to CNN, Rio de Janeiro authorities said a gunfight began after police got shot when they prepared to enter Vila Cruzeiro, where the leaders of an accused criminal organization have allegedly gathered.

Luiz Henrique Marinho Pires, Rio de Janeiro Military Police’s Secretary, said that ‘criminal migration’ into the neighborhood prompted the operation, which allegedly accommodates drug traffickers from other states.

Raull Santiago, a local activist, said that Vila Cruzeiro residents gathered at the top of the hill where the shooting took place to find the victims following the raid.

CNN reported that 21 people arrived dead at the hospital after the raid, while six others were injured.

At least 19 schools in Vila Cruzeiro closed due to the gunfire.
