10-Year-Old Shot Dead in Texas as She Called 911

A 10-year-old girl was shot dead in a school shooting while she was calling 911 on Tuesday.

Amerie Jo Garza, 10, spent her morning celebrating her appointment to the honor roll, but alleged gunman Salvadore Ramos, 18, shot her less than two hours later.

Berlinda Irene Arreola, Garza’s grandmother, said to The Daily Beast that the Ramos told her grandchild and other children that they were “going to die”.

“My granddaughter was shot and killed for trying to call 911, she died a hero trying to get help for her and her classmates,” Arreola wrote in a text message to The Daily Beast.

Garza was one of the 19 children killed when Ramos ran into Robb Elementary School at about 11:30 A.M. after shooting his grandmother, crashing his car in a ditch, and being sought by local authorities.

“Instead of grabbing it and breaking it or taking it from her, he shot her. She was sitting right next to her best friend. Her best friend was covered in her blood,”

The Daily Beast reported that the Texas Department of Public Safety said Ramos blockaded himself in a classroom and fired at “whatever was in his way.”
