Papua New Guinea Deputy Prime Minister Sam Basil died on May 11 after a car crash, police said.
Police Commissioner David Manning confirmed on May 12 that Basil died from injuries in a car accident.
The vehicle collision occurred on a road leading north from the town of Bulolo.
Manning said police transported Manning and three other injured persons to the Bulolo Health Facility, where Basil succumbed to his injuries “after hours of attempting to revive him.”
Basil was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m.
According to Manning, police have launched investigations and the second vehicle involved in the accident, as well as its driver, is
“The investigation will tell us what happened, so I am appealing for calm during this time to allow the course of the investigations to be completed in a timely manner,” Manning said.
