The Tunisian coast guard rescued 49 illegal immigrants from different African countries on Wednesday after their boat sank off the coast.
23 women were among the rescued immigrants, who were on a broken boat five miles off El Awabed in Sfax Governorate.
On April 24, Tunisian coast guard said that four boats carrying 120 African migrants and refugees bound for Italy had sunk off the coast again in Sfax Governorate, in which 17 migrants were dead.
Mourad Tukri, a spokesman for the Sfax said at that time that 98 migrants were rescued.
The Sfax coastline has become a major departure point for the Africans and other people from the Middle East to reach Europe aimed at starting a new and better life there.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in its recent report said that more than 123,000 illegal refugees and migrants have arrived in Italy in 2021, compared with more than 95,000 in the year 2020.
