First Dutch Foreign Volunteer Killed in Ukraine

A Dutch war volunteer has been killed for the first time since the conflict in Ukraine began.

The Dutch volunteer, identified in a report by the Dutch daily morning newspaper, The Telegraaf, as a certain “Ron”, 55, reportedly passed away in Ukraine on Wednesday, May 4.

A separate report by Dutch News identified him as Ron Vogelaar, quoting a family spokesperson. 

Vogelaar had joined the Ukrainian Foreign Legion and was killed near Kharkiv by artillery fire.

According to another Dutch volunteer who served in the same battalion as Vogelaar, he died immediately after the shelling.

According to a representative for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ukrainian authorities have yet to provide any information on this report.

The Ukrainian embassy in The Hague has made no statements on the slain Dutch national.
