Taiwan hopes that the world would sanction China if it invades the island, like how Russia is being sanctioned for its invasion of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said on Saturday.
“In the future, if we are threatened with force by China, or are invaded, of course, we hope the international community can understand and support Taiwan, and sanction these kinds of aggressive behaviors,” Wu said at the annual Europe Festival in Taipei.
The annual festival that commemorates the founding of what would become the European Union was, for this year, focused on showing support to Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
Wu said that “Taiwan stands with the international community” to impose sanctions on Russia, along with its ally Belarus, for its invasion of Ukraine.
Taiwan has been on high alert on worries that China might make a similar move to invade the island whose self-governance has been constantly ignored by Beijing.
