Brazilian politician Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin share equal blame for Ukraine’s conflict.
In an interview with TIME magazine published on Wednesday, Lula said that Zelenskyy should have caved into Russian opposition to Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and held talks with Putin to avoid the war.
“I see the president of Ukraine, speaking on television, being applauded, getting a standing ovation by all the parliamentarians,” said Lula and added that “This guy (Zelenskyy) is as responsible as Putin for the war.”
Lula also took a jab at Zelenskyy’s acting career prior to his presidency and said, “We should be having a serious conversation. OK, you were a nice comedian. But let us not make war for you to show up on TV.”
Lula was Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010 and is currently on his bid for a presidential comeback in elections against far-right incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro.
