U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Orders Investigation into Leak of Draft Opinion on Abortion

United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts ordered an investigation into the leak of a draft opinion that suggested that majority is poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision on abortion rights.

In a statement on May 3, Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the leaked draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito and obtained by Politico

But Roberts noted that the draft does not represent the Court’s final decision.

Roberts called the leak a “betrayal of the confidences of the Court… intended to undermine the integrity of our operations.”

“The work of the Court will not be affected in any way,” Roberts said.

“This was a singular and egregious breach of that trust that is an affront to the Court and the community of public servants who work here. I have directed the Marshal of the Court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak,” Roberts added.

The leak triggered demonstrations outside the top court.

Earlier on May 3, U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement that he will work with Congress to pass and sign a legislation that would codify abortion rights, if the draft opinion does reflect the final Court decision.

After Roberts confirmed that the draft is real, Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement that it was “clear” that “opponents of Roe want to punish women and take away their rights to make decisions about their own bodies.”
