The US Indo-Pacific Command has reported that a Russian vessel has been spotted in waters near Hawaii.
“As part of our normal daily operations, we closely track all vessels in the Indo-Pacific area of operations through maritime patrol aircraft, surface ships, and joint capabilities…I can tell you we are monitoring a Russian surface vessel operating in international waters in the vicinity of Hawaii,” said the Indo-Pacific Command.
Retired Lt. Colonel Hal Kempfer said that Russian ships in the Pacific are not uncommon and that there is no indication yet that their presence is a threat.
Kempfer presumed that the vessel might be an intelligence ship conducting surveillance just like during the Cold war.
The Russian Defence Ministry has neither confirmed nor denied that their ships were conducting operations near Hawaii.
