Leftist Colombian Presidential Candidate Claims Assassination Plot Against Him

Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s election frontrunner, stated he will cancel rallies in the coffee region owing to an alleged assassination plot.

Petro said in a tweet that the organized crime group “La Cordillera” was organizing an assassination attempt on the progressive candidate in alleged coordination with a member of the police intelligence unit SIJIN.

The Fiscalía General de la Nación (General Prosecutorial Office of the Nation), in a statement posted on Twitter, promptly announced an investigation into the suspected assassination plan.

Petro’s campaign staff was allegedly told to contact the section in charge of probing the assassination of student leader Lucas Villa in Pereira.

The prosecution stated that anything “that puts the integrity of the participants and the normal development of the election contest” would be investigated.
