Eight Die, Dozens In Intensive Care After Drinking Illegal Homemade Alcohol In Iran

At least eight people have died and dozens more admitted to the hospital after drinking tainted homemade alcohol in Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

Spokesperson of Hormozgan University of Medical Science, Dr. Fatemeh Nowruzian said Tuesday that another 59 people have been hospitalized with 17 of them in intensive care and connected with ventilators.

Nowruzian said the incident occurred on Monday late night, calling on the people to stop drinking any alcohol as it is poisonous.

Meanwhile, police said they have arrested eight people in connection with producing and selling alcohol which is strictly forbidden in Iran.

Police commander in Bandar Abbas, Timur Dolatiari said that they have discovered 1,278 liters of alcohol during the search from homes of the detainees,

“Two of them are also hospitalized after drinking their own-made alcohol,” local news agency Peykeiran quoted Dolatiari as saying.

Iran has strictly banned the production of alcohol, but people prefer to use homemade and substandard alcohol which is deadly and poisoning.
