California to Propose Amendment to Protect Abortion Rights

California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Monday that the state will propose an amendment to “enshrine the right to choose” in the state’s constitution, following a leaked draft on a possible U.S. Supreme Court moves to remove abortion rights in the country.

“We can’t trust SCOTUS to protect the right to abortion, so we’ll do it ourselves,” Newsom said in a tweet.

In a joint statement released by Newsom’s office, Senate President Toni Atkins and California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon backed the proposed amendment.

“California will not stand idly by as women across America are stripped of their rights and the progress so many have fought for gets erased,” the statement read.

The Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision which ruled that the U.S. Constitution protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose whether to have an abortion, according to a report by Politico on Monday.
