Okaloosa police found a 3-year-old asleep on a sidewalk in Fort Walton Beach and arrested its mother for child neglect on Saturday.
According to a news release from Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, police found the 3-year-old around 1 AM wrapped in a blanket while asleep on a sidewalk in Fort Walton Beach.
Okaloosa deputies also found two other young children asleep and alone inside a unit at the Choctaw Village Apartments, where security found the 3-year-old outside.
“The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office was called to Gibson Street around one a.m. Saturday morning, after a security officer found a three-year-old wrapped in a blanket asleep on a sidewalk. Subsequent investigation led to the discovery of two more young children asleep alone in an apartment at the complex,” the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators did not release the ages of the other two children found in the apartment complex.
Shyla Heidelberg, 25, eventually returned to the apartment and admitted she had gone to the nightclub about 90 minutes earlier, leaving the children unattended.
Heidelberg was charged with three counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and released from custody on Sunday.
