Sweden Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has admitted that the integration of immigrants in the country has failed and led to the creation of gang violence and parallel societies.
“Segregation has been allowed to go so far that we have parallel societies in Sweden. We live in the same country but in completely different realities. We will have to reassess our previous truths and make tough decisions,” Andersson said on Thursday.
Following the violence in the country over Easter, Anderson said Islamism and right-wing extremism were left unchecked in Sweden.
“What we saw were no political protests… Police were attacked with stones and Molotov cocktails. It was not a political act – it was a criminal act – an attack on the democracy that many have actually fled to,” Andersson said.
In June last year, the government implemented a new policy making residence permits time-limited for refugees and asylum seekers.
Before that, immigrants received permanent residency permits upon application.
