Blinken Says Iranian Attempts to Kill Pompeo, and Other US Officials

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday confirmed ongoing threats against the present and past US officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Testifying before a Senate panel, Blinken said that Iran attempted to assassinate former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and this is “real and ongoing.”

When Ted Cruz, a member of the US Senate asked Blinken that is it true the IRGC is actively trying to murder form senior offices, Blinken said there is an ongoing threat against them.

Blinken assured that they are making all efforts to protect “our people,” present and former, if “they’re under threat.”

This comes after reports revealed that the US State Department is paying millions of dollars to protect Mike Pompeo and former Iran envoy Brian Hook from threats. 

According to reports the cost of protecting Pompeo and Hook between August 2021 and February 2022 amounted to $13.1 million, as both the officials are facing “serious and credible” threats from Iran.

Blinken in response to Cruz that if the department asked the IRGC to stop their attacks against US officials, said that “one of the messages we are sending to Iranians within the context of any engagements that we have directly or indirectly, is to stop targeting our people.”

Blinke said that the attacks against US officials gone up after US withdrew from Iran’s nuclear agreement and also placed IRGC as a foreign terrorist origination.

Blinken also said that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, especially when it act incredible aggressive, and favored IRGC to remain in terrorist list.

The Iranian government has repeatedly asked US to remove IRGC from the terrorist list.
