Russia Warns NATO of Risk of Nuclear War

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused NATO of engaging in a proxy battle against Moscow by arming Ukraine with weapons, warning that this creates a serious risk of nuclear war.

Lavrov said in a televised interview that the risk of a nuclear conflict should not be underestimated. “The risks now are considerable,” said the foreign minister.

“I would not want to elevate those risks artificially. Many would like that. The danger is serious, real. And we must not underestimate it.”

Lavrov added that any agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine would depend largely on the military situation on the ground. He also blamed the U.S. and the Ukrainian government for the lack of peace negotiations.

“The United States has practically ceased all contacts simply because we were obliged to defend Russians in Ukraine,” Lavrov said, repeating Moscow’s explanation for invading its neighbor Kyiv.

Lavrov pointed out that Washington’s efforts to send Kyiv sophisticated equipment to fight Moscow only prolonged the conflict instead of ending it.

“NATO, in essence, is engaged in a war with Russia through a proxy and is arming that proxy. War means war,” Lavrov asserted.
