Reporters Without Borders on Tuesday called on Libyan authorities to immediately release journalist Ali Al-Rifaoui, disclose his location, and ensure that journalists can cover local events without fear of detention or harassment.
“We call for the unconditional release of 218News Channel’s correspondent Al-Rifaoui,” Secretary-General of Reporters Without Borders, Christophe Deloire said, stressing that it is unacceptable that Libyan journalists continue to be targeted in the line of duty.
218News said that Al-Rifaoui was detained on March 26 by armed officers from the Internal Security Agency, a coalition of armed groups led by the Libyan Arab Armed Forces.
The Libyan authorities refused to disclose Al-Rifaoui’s current location or condition.
218News called on Libyan officials to refrain from arresting journalists who are just doing their jobs.
