US Citizen Sentenced to Death in China for Murder

A court in east China announced on Thursday that it sentenced a US citizen to death for murdering his Chinese girlfriend in 2021.

“The Ningbo Intermediate People’s Court holds that the accused, Shadeed Abdulmateen, deliberately and illegally deprived the life of another, his behavior constituting the crime of intentional homicide,” the court said.

The court said Shadeed met with his 21-year-old girlfriend, surnamed Chen, near a bus stop in Ningbo, where he killed her.

“Shadeed premediated a revenge killing, stabbing and cutting Chen’s face and neck multiple times, causing Chen’s death,” the court said.

“From mid to late May 2021, Chen proposed breaking up many times, but Shadeed did not agree and made verbal threats to her,” the court added.

The court described Shadeed’s motives as “vile,” his criminal intent “resolute,” and his means “cruel.”

“The circumstances of the crime were particularly bad and the consequences particularly serious, deserving of punishment according to law,” the court said.

The Ningbo court announced it had sentenced the defendant to capital punishment at the April 21 trial watched by more than 20 witnesses, including members of the public and local Chinese Communist Party officials.

Meanwhile, a State Department spokesperson said they are aware of the court’s verdict.

“We take seriously our responsibility to assist U.S. citizens abroad and are monitoring the situation. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment,” the spokesperson said.
