Greek Authorities Impound Russian Tanker

Greek officials apprehended the Russian-flagged tanker “Pegas,” which was docked near the island of Karystos.

According to a report by the local news outlet Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), the detention order was issued by the Authority Against Legalising Income from Criminal Activities, in accordance with European Union and NATO restrictions against ships owned by Russian interests.

The oil tanker, which had 19 Russian sailors on board, was guided to the Peloponnese by a tug after it had a mechanical breakdown while seeking shelter from the storm.

ANA-MPA quoted sources as saying that the order for its seizure concerns the ship and not its cargo which would be transferred to another ship.

Greek news agency Kathimerini later reported that the Pegas will be released after a new order was issued by the Greek Anti-Money Laundering Authority but no explanations were given.
