US and Panama Strengthen Their Migration Cooperation

The United States and Panama signed a Bilateral Arrangement on Migration and Protection which outline the countries’ commitments to collaborate and work on the improvement of migration management and promote access to legal paths and protection for migrants.

The Arrangement on Migration and Protection will reinforce the United States’ growing regional migration management system with countries across the Americas.

Panama’s Minister of Security Juan Pino and Chargé d’Affaires Stewart Tuttle of the Embassy of Panama City signed the Arrangement in Panama City On April 19.

The Arrangement followed the Regional Migration Ministerial in Colombia in October 2021, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to constructive regional response to migration and refugee movement.

“It also embodies the principles of that regional approach through humane border management, stabilization of displaced populations and host communities, and improved access to protection and legal pathways to provide an alternative to irregular migration.” said the US Department of State.
