Fourteen People Arrested over Delhi Communal Violence

Indian police arrested 14 people involved in the violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims during a Hindu religious procession in New Delhi on Saturday.

There were no reported deaths from the incident, but six police officers and several others were injured, during the procession.

In recent weeks, religious clashes between the majority Hindu and minority Muslim communities during religious processions in several parts of the country have broken out.

Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that intolerance among religious communities was not worsening.

“Fringe elements, who are unable to digest the peace and prosperity in the country, try to defame India’s inclusive culture and commitment,” Naqvi said.

Naqvi also said that it was not the government’s job to dictate dietary practices to the people, in reference to the incident during the week, when university students clashed on campus over the serving of non-vegetarian food in the canteen, which Hindus consider auspicious.
