Russian Federation Council speaker says Chemical Weapons in Russia already disposed of

Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has claimed that Russia already destroyed all chemical weapons stockpiles five years ago.

According to Matviyenko, the alleged use of chemical weapons was attempted “to smear the Russian Army” and “smear Russia”.

“This all is, of course, a lie. Russia has no chemical weapons, Russia fulfilled all its obligations; in 2017, we completed total disposal of chemical weapons, unlike the US, who still have not disposed of their stockpile of chemical weapons,” Matviyenko said in a statement published on the Russian News Agency (TASS) website.

Matviyenko, who spoke to reporters on Wednesday, accused Ukrainian authorities of “being complicit” in the spread of disinformation in this case.

In a press briefing with Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby on Tuesday, he said they have a “justified reason” to release publicly the intelligence they have about the possible employment of chemical weapons by Russia.

“Again, it comes from a mosaic of information we’ve gleaned. It’s related more toward what is unfolding in Ukraine rather than some, you know, long historical practice. Although I would add that the Russians have certainly proven more than willing to use chemical weapons when it suited them in the past,” Kirby said.

Kirby emphasized they also cannot confirm reports on social media about the use of potential chemical agents through the use of a drone.

“We just are not able to confirm it. We’re obviously taking it seriously and we’re monitoring it, we’re trying to do the best we can to figure out what, if anything, happened. But we’re not in a position to confirm it right now,” Kirby added.
