Veteran Hong Kong Journalist Allan Au Reportedly Arrested for ‘Sedition’

Hong Kong police arrested veteran journalist Allan Au on April 11 on charges of sedition, local media reported.

The national security police in Hong Kong arrested Au, 54, in a morning raid on suspicion of conspiring to publish and reproduce “seditious materials.”

Police reportedly took Au to Kwai Chung police station.

Police have yet to release an official statement.

Au’s arrest comes as the latest blow to the local press in Hong Kong, where the media freedom rating has been declining as China cracks down on dissent.

Au worked at local media outlets, including Stand News, a pro-democracy news outlet that was forced to shut down last year after police raided its offices and arrested senior staff on sedition charges.

Au currently works as a professional consultant at the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
