French Voters Barred from Voting in Shanghai

French nationals in Shanghai were reportedly unable to participate in overseas voting due to the ongoing lockdown in the city.

Due to the strict COVID-19 measures, Chinese authorities have not allowed the opening of the polling stations inside Shanghai’s French consulate while residents have been unable to leave their homes.

“As for Shanghai, as you know, the city is under a generalized and strictly enforced containment measure. Repeated approaches have been made to the authorities, including a high level, in order to allow, on the one hand, the authorization to open the polling stations and, on the other hand, an exceptional authorization to leave for voters and members confined polling stations and assessors.,” said France’s embassy in Beijing.

Polling stations in Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Hong Kong are expected to operate as normal while the one in Shenyang will follow special traffic regulations.

Local authorities in Shanghai have not yet commented on the situation while France’s embassy in Beijing has yet to announce plans for the second round of voting.
