Chinese surgeons at state-run civilian and military hospitals had removed the hearts of death row prisoners even before brain death declaration, new research in Australia found.
The research concluded that Chinese surgeons became the executioners on behalf of the state. The practice has been in operation for more than three decades, the research found.
International rule on organ and tissue donation states that organ procurement should be done only if the donor is pronounced dead. It also states that organ procurement should not cause a donor’s death.
The authors of the research accused Chinese surgeons of breaching the donor rule. Chinese surgeons declared inmates dead even before the doctors assessed the donors’ breathing ability through a ventilator.
Matthew Robertson, the co-author of the study, said that the state and military-affiliated hospitals choose to execute prisoners by harvesting organs because the practice is extremely profitable.
“These surgeries are highly profitable for the doctors and hospitals that engage in them,” Robertson said.
The study published on April 4 conducted a forensic review of 2,838 papers drawn from data of 124,770 transplant publications written in Chinese. Evidence showed that 71 cases, found between 1980 and 2015, did not properly declare prisoners as brain dead. The removal of the heart caused the death of some prisoners, it added.
