Boston Marathon Bars Russian and Belarusian Runners

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A) has announced the exclusion of Russians and Belarusians in the 2022 Boston Marathon.

An announcement released on B.A.A’s website said that this is part of their open registration process, especially for Russians and Belarusians who are currently residing in either country.

“Like so many around the world, we are horrified and outraged by what we have seen and learned from the reporting in Ukraine,” said President & CEO of the B.A.A. Tom Grilk.

Grilk added that they must do what they can to show their support to Ukrainians.

However, B.A.A. has made some exceptions for Russian and Belarusian citizens who are not residents of either country where they can compete but will not be allowed to run under the flag of their country.

B.A.A. said it will make “reasonable attempts to refund athletes from Russia or Belarus who will no longer be able to participate.”

For Ukrainians, who are registered in the marathon, but are unable to compete have been given an option to get a refund or defer their participation to a future year.

The exclusion of Russia or Belarus in the races and events of B.A.A. will be in effect until further notice.
