Russia To Fine Wikipedia Over Information On Ukraine War

Russian media censorship agency will impose an administrative liability up to 4 million rubles or about $49,000 to Wikipedia for not taking down “inaccurate” information about the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) said the internet portal has not deleted “unreliable socially significant materials, as well as other prohibited information” from its website.

The media censorship agency has sent a notification to Wikipedia to take down the information particularly on the special military operations on the RF Armed Forces in Ukraine. The published information on Wikipedia aimed at misinforming the Russians, said Roskomnadzor.

In March, a Russian media reported that Roskomnadzor  threatened to block Wikipedia over its article “2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine.” The article accounted Russia’s attacks toward Ukraine including the firing of ballistic missile on hospitals, kindergarten, and orphanage, killing Ukrainian children and medical workers.

Wikimedia Foundation said it will defend the rights of its volunteers to continue providing reliable information in times of crisis.

“As ever, Wikipedia is an important source of reliable, factual information in this crisis. In recognition of this important role, we will not back down in the face of efforts to censor and intimidate members of our movement. We stand by our mission to deliver free knowledge to the world,” Wikimedia Foundation said.
