Haitian Opposition Member Shot During Protests

Unidentified armed individuals shot former deputy of Tabarre Arnel Bélizaire during a protest for the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry.

Reports said that the gunmen shot Bélizaire at least four times. Bélizaire was brought to the hospital for treatment.

Haitian police said they do not see any motives for the attack.

Bélizaire and several others were arrested in December 2019 according to the  Court of Appeal of Port-au-Prince ruling. The men were accused of conspiracy against the internal security of the state, illegal possession of firearms, and criminal conspiracy. Bélizaire was released from prison in December 2021.

Haiti police are currently investigating the shooting incident.

In January, a gunman targeted Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry survived the attack but at least one person was killed and several were injured during the incident, police reports said.
