Female Iranian Filmmakers Infuriated over ‘Sexual Violence’ in Cinema

Iranian female filmmakers and actresses in a joint statement on Friday expressed annoyance over sexual violence in Iran’s film industry and called for an end to the violence against women in the cinema.

The signatories of the statement include famous names such as Niki Karimi, Hedieh Tehani, Pouran Derakhshandeh, Behnoush Tabatabaei, Taraneh Alidousti, Mitra Hajjar, and many other powerful names in the Iranian cinema.

The signatories of the statement strongly condemned any “harassment and sexual blackmail of women’ in the workplace and said that legal action should be taken against those who were found guilty of “sexual violence.”

They also said that women are going through a dire situation in the Iranian film industry, and called for the formation of an independent committee to investigate reports of harassment of female filmmakers and actresses.

They also called for the establishment of an oversight body to monitor the situation inside the industry while describing gender inequality as the main issue behind sexual violence.

There have been serious allegations of sexual harassment of women in the Iranian cinema, but so far no one is being investigated in Iran’s patriarchal society.
