Tunisian President Kais Saied Dissolves Parliament

Tunisian President Kais Saied announced Wednesday evening that he has dissolved the Parliament after its members held an online plenary session where they voted through a bill against his “exceptional measures”.

Saied described the move of the parliamentarians as a “failed coup attempt” and a “plot against the State’s internal and external security”, according to a report from Tunisian news agency Agence Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP).

The Presidential decree on the dissolution of the Parliament also published on the same day can be found in the Official Gazette of the Tunisian Republic.

Under Presidential Decree No. 2002-309 of March 30, 2022, it specified that it will “take effect immediately”.

“This plenary of the Parliament is devoid of any legitimacy,” said President Saied.
