Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on April 8.
In a speech in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, located in the southern Philippines, Duterte said that Xi wanted to talk to him.
Duterte added he will meet with Xi since he considers him a “friend”.
Duterte visited Cebu to attend the meeting of the National and Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict where he also emphasized that the Philippines will remain neutral in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
In 2019, Duterte had a state visit to Beijing where he reiterated the stronger ties between the Philippines and China.
