A pair of cousins died after one accidentally shot the other before killing herself while live streaming on Instagram in what family members described as a tragic accident.
Paris Harvey, 12, shot her 14-year-old cousin Kuaron then shot herself while they were on Instagram live in a bathroom at the Cupples Station Loft Apartments in St. Louis, Missouri on March 25, police said.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department initially classified the incident a murder-suicide, but family members called it “a freak accident.”
Family members said they believed the gun belonged to Kuaron.
Paris’ mother Shinise told NBC affiliate KSDK that her daughter was at the apartment to attend a family party to celebrate March birthdays.
“They were making a video, and [Paris] was playing with the gun, but it went off and hit [Kuaron],” Shinise, who was not in the apartment during the shooting, said.
“[Paris] dropped the gun, and it fell, and it went off to my knowledge. And then when she picked it up, she picked it up by the barrel and it went off. That’s all I know,” Shinise further said.
Kuaron’s mother also did not attend the party, KSDK reported, citing a family member.
Paris’ grandmother Susan, who had seen the Instagram live video, told St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Paris and Kuaron were not “arguing or anything like that.”
“They were playing with the gun, when they shouldn’t have been… I think it just went off. It went off by mistake,” Susan said.
It is unclear on March 28 if charges were going to be filed in connection with the deaths.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
