Large Scale Hacking Attack Downs Ukrainian Telecommunications Network

Ukrainian state-owned telecommunications company Ukrtelecom reported that it experienced a 15-hour outage after being hit by an alleged cyberattack.

According to NetBlocks, Ukretelecom’s connectivity collapsed to 13% of pre-war levels on the morning of Thursday 24 February 2022.

“Today, the enemy launched a powerful cyberattack against #Ukrtelecom ’s IT-infrastructure. According to Yurii Shchyhol, the Chairman of the @dsszzi, at the moment massive cyberattack against #Ukrtelecom is neutralized. Resuming services is underway. #Ukraine #CyberAttack #war,” said the State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection of Ukraine.

Ukrtelecom added that it has temporarily limited its services to commercial clients to continue providing services for Ukraine’s armed forces. 

There is no information yet on what kind of cyber attack Ukrtelecom suffered from while there is no confirmation yet if it was conducted by Russian state actors. 

Ukrtelecom is Ukraine’s biggest provider of fixed Internet in terms of geographical coverage and the amount of data they move.
